Dental Crowns

Not all smiles can stay beautiful forever. Dental decay, injuries, grinding, clenching and normal wear and tear can take their toll on the teeth, leaving your smile in need of a little sprucing up. In many cases, Dr. Abadan uses dental crowns to repair cracked or chipped teeth, reinforce weak teeth, replace old fillings or correct other dental problems. If you have a tooth that is on the brink of succumbing to damage, decay or disease, explore your dental crown options at Dr. Abadan’s San Diego dental practice.

About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also called caps, restore structure and functionality to teeth that have been destroyed by decay, disease or a traumatic event. Custom-crafted in a dental laboratory, crowns look very similar to natural teeth and are indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth. Crowns are made of porcelain, ceramic or metal materials.

How Dental Crowns Can Enhance Your Smile

Crowns provide structural support to a weak or damaged tooth. They are most often used to restore functionality to teeth with significant cracks or chips, excessive decay or another structural deficiency that is compromising the tooth’s health and form. They are also used in cases of extreme wear and tear, enamel erosion or damage due to trauma. Crowns completely encase the tooth, providing a normal appearance and stable chewing surface.

Dental Crown Treatment with D

During your first visit, Dr. Abadan will take some impressions to help guide the creation of your custom dental crown. The impressions may be used by the dental laboratory that Dr. Abadan works with to create a model of the crown and help with its fabrication.

Dr. Abadan will prepare your tooth to receive the dental crown by removing some tooth enamel. To protect your tooth until your permanent restoration is ready, she will place a temporary crown.

Once your permanent crown is ready, you will need to return to Dr. Abadan’s office to have it placed. She will remove the temporary crown and place your customized permanent crown over your tooth. Dr. Abadan will bond the crown by placing a light-sensitive resin between your tooth and the crown, and then hardening the resin with a special curing light.

Once the crown is in place, Dr. Abadan will make any necessary finishing touches to ensure it blends in smoothly with your surrounding teeth. If the crown is made of porcelain, it will have the same translucent quality as your natural teeth, so Dr. Abadan may gently buff it to give it extra gleam.

Partial Crowns

Dr. Abadan also works with partial crowns, called onlays, which cover one or more of the tooth’s points (cusps), and inlays, which are similar to fillings and placed within the cusps of the tooth’s chewing surface. Dr. Abadan may recommend inlays or onlays when a case requires a more conservative restoration than a dental crown.
