Oral Surgery Services

When it comes to dentistry, only certain dentists perform surgical procedures. Whether you are looking for a new dentist or are currently under the care of one and need more intensive procedures, we encourage you to reach out to us, so our team can examine you, give you an opinion regarding whether or not you need surgery, what procedure will benefit you, and what you can expect from the process.

Why do people get oral surgery?

Oral surgery may be necessary for three main reasons. Firstly, for health reasons. Tooth decay is a prevalent issue that can be easily treated with regular dental care. However, when left untreated, it can cause infections and result in tooth removal or a root canal. Oral surgery may also be required to address gum problems, such as gum disease and recession, where a surgical gum graft may be necessary.

The second reason for oral surgery is to remove wisdom teeth. Although not always immediately harmful, impacted wisdom teeth can cause discomfort and future infections. Removing them can prevent these issues and stop the wisdom teeth from pushing other teeth forward.

Lastly, our Poway patients may opt for oral surgery for cosmetic reasons, particularly to replace missing teeth with dental implants. Dental implants provide a secure and long-lasting solution for tooth loss by replacing the root in addition to the tooth. Our dentist implants a titanium post under the gums and attaches it to the jaw bone, allowing it to fuse with the bone through osseointegration. This process may take a few months, but it results in a new root system that is as secure as a natural one. This allows for the attachment of a new tooth that is both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

How do I prepare for oral surgery?

Our top priority is ensuring your comfort during the procedure, and one way we achieve this is by ensuring that you are fully prepared. We believe in educating our patients and will provide you with a step-by-step explanation of the procedure. It’s important to note that since each patient and surgery is unique, our overview here is more general in nature. Our dentist will take the time to discuss your individual case with you. Generally, you will need to avoid eating for several hours, possibly starting the night before, as standard protocol when receiving anesthesia. To aid in your recovery, we suggest purchasing ice packs and stocking up on soft foods, water, and any items that can help you relax and stay comfortable. Additionally, we recommend taking ibuprofen to help manage any discomfort.

Is oral surgery used for orthodontics?

Yes, addressing overcrowding is one of the issues orthodontists tackle when straightening teeth. To create more space in the mouth, there are certain procedures available, such as tooth extraction. While not always required, some orthodontists may suggest removing one or several teeth as part of the treatment process. Orthodontists also take into consideration jaw alignment. Non-invasive approaches are often used to treat overbites and underbites. However, in severe cases, oral surgery may be necessary to reposition the jaw. Whether oral surgery is needed as part of your orthodontic treatment will depend on your specific case, and this can be discussed during your initial consultation with your orthodontist.

Can you provide me with oral surgery if I am being treated by another dentist?

Certainly, we are able to accommodate your needs. During your visit to our Gentle Dentistry dental office, please inform us if you are currently receiving dental care from another provider and whether they have recommended that you undergo oral surgery. It’s important to note that not all dentists are qualified to perform surgical procedures. If you prefer to continue under your current dentist’s care following the surgery, we can certainly work with them. Alternatively, if you would like to become a new patient at our practice, we welcome you with open arms.

What is the recovery time for oral surgery?

The recovery period for oral surgery varies depending on the specific procedure. Generally, temporary bleeding may occur but can be managed with the provided gauze. Swelling is the primary source of discomfort and can be alleviated by applying an ice pack to the affected area for 15-minute intervals with 15-minute rest periods in between. Be cautious not to irritate the skin and use a light cloth if necessary. Ibuprofen can also be taken to minimize swelling and discomfort, with the ice pack typically only needed for a day or two and the ibuprofen potentially required for up to a week. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. It is recommended to stick to soft foods that do not require much chewing, such as soup or steamed vegetables, during the recovery period. Planning ahead and following the instructions of your dentist are important for a smooth recovery and to avoid aggravating the surgical site.
