Family Dentistry Services

Gentle Dentistry treats patients of all ages and does so in a warm and welcoming environment. Our office is conveniently located, and we welcome patients throughout the San Diego Area to schedule an appointment and experience how we can keep everyone in the family in optimal oral health.

Age Groups

Establishing healthy dental habits starts at a young age. Healthy gum health helps your child’s teeth grow properly and can set them on the right path to good oral hygiene. We can also guide your young ones to the right practices and procedures to take in caring for their teeth. We take care with our young patients that they are comfortable and at ease during their dental experience.

As your child ages, regular and routine checkups keep their mouths free of disease and cavities – which can be more expensive and painful to handle if not caught early enough. We also provide Invisalign to help them start out in adulthood with their best smile. Our goal with children is to keep them comfortable and relaxed so that they will enjoy visiting our family dentist and be willing to come back.

We focus to keep their teeth healthy and free from cavities. This can involve additional treatments to strengthen the teeth and protect them. Gentle Dentistry is aware that it is much easier to keep a child’s teeth healthy and free of cavities than to do major dental work.

With adults, our focus is on keeping teeth healthy with preventative care. If a tooth gets damaged, we can restore it to a natural look, feel and function. As we age, our teeth can weaken and become infected more easily. Even the most conscientious participants in dental hygiene can find they need treatments to reinforce or replace teeth, treat gum issues or get partial to full dentures. These are all normal parts of life and aging. By conducting regular dental exams, Gentle Dentistry of San Diego can help you keep your teeth strong and functional.

Philosophy Of Care

At Gentle Dentistry you get the best family dentistry in San Diego. Our dental office is set up to provide your services for any age of patient – from babies to seniors and everything in between. Our staff place great emphasis on your health and well being – and the best way to approach this is through preventative care. We keep patients in good oral health to enhance their overall quality of life — free from dental concerns.

We go the extra mile to educate patients in good oral hygiene which includes a healthy diet. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products and crunchy fruits and veggies.

Along with usual brushing in the morning and at bedtime, we recommend that when away from home you carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. Frequent brushing can greatly reduce a persons’ risk of cavities or gum disease.

We strongly recommend that your teeth are cleaned and examined at least twice a year to guarantee your dental health. During these dental exams we thoroughly clean your teeth and carefully inspect for signs of cavities or gum disease. If found, they will be treated right away to halt any further development of the problem.

Visits To Our Family Dental Office

We welcome patients throughout the San Diego area to schedule appointments with our family dentist. Everyone should have their teeth cleaned and examined at least twice a year so it has been awhile since you visited your family dentist, don’t delay in scheduling an appointment.

During these exams, Gentle Dentistry will make sure that your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and look for signs of cavities or gum disease. If such a case is found, it will be treated immediately to prevent it from spreading and creating further problems. Early detection and treatment are important for reducing any pain that may arise as a result of infection.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Gentle Dentistry work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while perfoming the dental treatments. Our patients visit us from throughout California for just that reason.

Family Dentist FAQs

Are baby teeth really that important to my child?

Primary, or “baby,” teeth are important for many reasons. They not only help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

What is the best age for children to start brushing their own teeth?

We recommend around age 3 to start using a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. However their brushing should be closely monitored to ensure they do not swallow the toothpaste.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?

Rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Then see a dentist as soon as possible.

How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?

Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child’s primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

What can I do to protect teeth during sporting events?

Soft plastic mouth guards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouth guard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

How safe are dental X-rays?

There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90% less radiation.
